How much do i need to start investing in the stock market online?

I am interested in getting started in the stock market but i need a few questions answered. I am going to use something like E-Trade so that much i know. About how much money do i need to get started? I know that depends on which stock i opt to invest in, but i'm just looking for a general amount needed to get going with a decent corporation. Do online stock market companies charge monthly fees or only when i trade/purchase stock? I am unfamiliar with it so any advice would be much obliged. Thank you!
