I would like to invest in the stock market but I don't know how?

I am a 19 year old college student. . I have about 1,500 dollars in savings and checkings. I would like to invest and make some money in the stock market. How can I do this?. What are the steps to doing this? My friend just made lots of money and he was able to purchase a 30,000 dollar car. WOW I was shocked. I hear that stock market is like gambling is this true?. I really have no idea how this works. Should I get a brokerage? I don't know what that does neither. It says that there is a fee 3-4/ trade. I am not sure.
